ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Palmerston North branch of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society ; in iU review of the past season’s activities, states inter alia: “The shooting season opened on May 1 with a bright, calm und frosty morning the ducks, which were very numerous* having decidedly the best of the day, and consequently the bags were very much below the average, iin isolated cases some good bags wero taken. Hares, although fairly plentiful, could not be said to be numerous, and no huge bags were reported. Pheasants are steadily on the increaso and :t ; s expected that some good bags will be obtained this season. Some titty birds have been liberated in the district within the past month, these having been placed on properties which are accessible to any license holder. Quail are also very much on the increase, many large flocacs being in evidence in various parts of the district. Such increases are attributable to previous dry seasons. ‘•The fishing season now closing has been on the whole good. The stocking of the Tiritea stream with fry has proved a decided success and some good baskets have been recorded, sbme of the fish ranging up to two and U-half pounds. It is very regrettable that a great amount of worm fishing by youths has taken place, but it is very difficult to obtain prosecution. The Mahawdtu rivor Is well stocked and although the catches recorded were not large, the fish were in excellent condition and some fine specimens were taken. It is apparent that trie fish have changod their habits and are not so easily enticed ashore as previously. During the year 600 yearlings were received from Masterton, and together with some 1500 from the local holding pond wero liberated in the Manawatu river. Of 60,000 fry allotted, 20,000 were liberated in the Tiritea, 16,000 in tho holding pond, and the balance distributed in various parts of the Manawatu river. From the number of small fish to bo seen in the rivers, fisaermen can look forward ‘o excellent prospects next season.” The report concludes by extending thanks to Mr 11. E Bennett for the use of tho Kosy Hail iOr meetings of the society free of charge.
