FOXTON NOTES

BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent). The last, meeting of the siting borough Council was held on Mc.in.ay night, when the Mayor (Mr John U'-.n ysiull) jiis'Uetl. 1L was decided that the road foreman and roadman lie instructed to lurf ever the cricket pitch and to put 'll one day levelling the track on Victoria Pa A, by request from the Hockey Club. A letter was received from Mr k. T. Heath,of Purcell s'rwt, ashing for the in stallation of two gai, cookers anti a. califont in terms of the motion patted by the council at its last meeting.—lt was decided that the gas manager go into the matter and report to next meeting. The town clerk was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his interesting and comprehensive report of the council's work during its period of oflice. It was decided that the Mayor and Cr Adame attend the conference of the Levin-Marton Railway league to be held in Foxton. A letter was received from the stationmaster, Foxton, stating that it is proposed to re-schedule the Foxton branch trains, and submitting the proposed timetable with a view ot obtaining the council’s views on the mutter. The alteration would provide a connection at Palmerston North in the morning from the down Auckland express which arrived at Palmerston at 10.13 a.m., and a connection in the afternoon with the down New Plymouth mail and up Auckland express. —The council decided to support the proposed alterations. The Fire Board drew the council’s notice to the necessity of maintaining the street hydrants and to the, unsatisfactory order of ihe indicators.—The matter waa referred to the road foreman.

The secretary of the Railway Board wrote stating that in reference to the deletion of the Levin stop of the New Plymouth and Napier mail trains, the hoard gave very careful consideration to the question of deleting intermediate stops for the express trains before taking any action, but in the interests of the longdistance passengers an adjustment of the intermediate stopping places was necessary to permit of accelerated time schedules being arranged for these trains. In curtailing the stops the department endeavoured to make suitable provision for districts that would he affected by the change. It was recognised when the alterations were in force that some little inconvenience would arise at times and it wei with a view to reducing this to • a mjaunuin that suitable auxiliary trains were arranged.—Received. The borough treasurer reported that during the past month the sum of £709 16s lOd had been received and had been placed to the credit of the following accounts: District fund account £571 6s Bd, cemetery £4. drainago construction loan account £134 10s 2d. The accounts at credit were: Cemetery £lOl 7s 9d, drainage construction loan £3OO 14s 6d, gasworks £454 10s lid, general £136 3s 7d, interest £9B 0s sd, library £B6 0s 7d, reserves £153 10s Id, town hall pictures £547 16s 2d, water and drainage loan £535 2s did waterworks £22 15s 6d, a total of £2436 2s sd. Accounts amounting to £IOO7 4s 4d were passed for payment. The gas manager reported that the apparatus at the works was in fairly good order and working quite satisfactory. There had been a good deal of work done outside and more was being done as time permitted. The water and drainage report stated that during the month the following works had been carried out by the water and drainage staff: Carting sewerage timber from Robinson street to Union street, meter reading, repairing water meters, and stock taking. The maintenance work in connection with the water and drum age had been attended to. During the month of March 875,000 gallons of water vere pumped and 31 amperes of power used. The road foreman’s leport stated that during the past month the following v ork had been engaged in by t.he road staff: Tar sealing Russell street, ‘rimming the willows which obstructed view- of approach to Whyte street, cleaning drains Analiou and Johnston streets and Avenue road arid general maintenance. Tile tar sealing of Russell street had been continued to within eight chains of the park entrance but owing to the lower temperature and the tar being too thick for penetration the men had hud to suspend operations for the present. Six trucks of Belmont metal had been ordered for the patching of the worst of tho ruts in various roads and this was now coming to hand. During the month of March 21 head of stock w'ere impounded by the ranger and driving fees to the amount of 8s collected. The Mayor reported on a conversation he had had with the board’s inspector (Mr Stuckey) regarding the establishment of a district high school locally. 110 said it was highly probable that such a school would be established and he was of opinion that the council should help this matter along by offering the use of the town hall supper room and a room upstairs at the hull for class-rooms. —It was decided that tho matter of class-room accommodation at the town hall bo referred to the incoming council for favourable consideration. It. was decided that tho matter of the Anzac Day memorial service ho left in the hands of the Mayor and the various ministers of religion to arrange.

At the conclusion of business Cr Walker moved the following motion: “That the Mayor bo asked to present the council with an enlarged photograph of himself to be hung in the council chamber.” This was carried and Or Walker said ho was very sorry that the Mayor was not again Becking Mayoral honours. In the past he had carried out the work of the council in a most capable manner. He had at all times carried out the wishes of the members of the council and whether in favour or opposed to a resolution, had always put it forward in an unbiassed manner. The thanks of the council was due to him and the speaker moved the fllowing motion, seconded by Cr Bryant: “That it be placed on record the many years of service rendered by the Mayor (John Chrystall, Esq.) and to wish that he may long be spared to enjoy ■ the rest from municipal work and that at soirio future date he may see his way clear to again accept the responsibilities of civic duties.”

Crs Bryant, Ross, Thompson, Parkin and Adams also made eulogistic reference to the Mayor and the manner in which he had conducted the affairs of the council. The Mayor thanked the members for their kind remarks and gave a brief outline of the work done during his term of office.

The motion was then put and carried,
