Ashhurst Notes.
(From our own correspondent.) No reply had come to hand at Friday's meeting of the Oroua Council relative to Gorge Bridge subsidy. The rangers will impound stock both during night and day commencing on Monday. The Library Committee acknowledge with thanks the receipt of a parcel of the " Sphere," from Mr Acheson-Gray. It is pleasant news for this district that Palmerston will run a member of Parliament all on its own at next election. If this eventuates, residents in this district will have the satisfaction of supporting or abusing the same candidate, instead of, as at present, residents on one side of the street being Palmerston electors, and on the other side Oroua electors. We do not much care which electorate we are in, but we do like to support or agree to differ over the same candidate.
On Monday the post office will be open from 9 to 10 a.m. for telegrams and letters; the remainder of the day it will be closed. All places of business will be closed. Entries are coming in for Mounsey's auction sale on June 1.1 th. A prisoner en route from Woodville side to Palmerston could not resist the temptation, when the train stopped here, to have " just one more," so he gathered himself together and wished the other occupants of the carriage a very good day, then made a bee line for the hotel where he offered to swop a forty-horse-power thirst for a long beer. A fartherly constable, however, arrived on the scene and in a most persuasive manner induced him to accept lodgings at the expense of the State. Everything in the garden is not lovely, in connection with Volunteer matters here. There is a very heavy strain, and something must snap Perhaps 'twere better so, we are not a blood-thirsty Jot. Messrs Lucas Bros, and Fisher in returning home from the dance last night met with an exciting experience. On getting into the trap the horse commenced kicking and didn't stop until there was very little more than two wheels left. Unfortunately Mr P. Lucas had his leg broken and the other two occupants a very severe shaking.. Mr West rendered first aid, and Mr Bolton conveyed Mr Lucas to the hospital.
