(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 1. The general working account of the Canterbury Jockey Club showed a surplus of £3948 2s 5d for the season. The chairman, Mr G. G. Stead, said the opponents of. racing were unable to advance any evidence in support of their allegations that racing and the totalisator were prejudicing the welfare of the community. NAPIER, June 1. Nominations for the Napier Steeplechase, 3 miles: Westward, Lissa, Comfort, Eclair, Lurcher, Playfair, liakaria, Kiatere, Blackberry, South Star, Nadador, Phaetonitis. Sleepwell, Catherine Gordon, Swimmer. Otaki Races. On Monday, Prince of Wales Birthday, the Otaki Racing Club will commence its winter meeting. This year most excellent acceptances have been received numerically, while the quality of the horses engaged is rather higher than that usually" competing at the meeting. Excellent train arrangements have been made by the club, excursion tickets being issued on each day of the meeting from Palmerston, The course is reoorted to be in good oondition, and given fine weather, a big contingent is sure to journey from Palmerston and Wellington to the seaside meeting. The following horses may run prominently in their respective engagements : —
