Harry Telford was recommended for a jockey's license by an informal meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club last night. Carbine Colt Wins the Derby. The English Derby Stakes, " of 6500 sovs, for entire colts and fillies foaled in 1903, colts to carry 9st, fillies Bst9lb, about one mile and a half," resulted as stated yesterday in a win for Major Eustace Lodder's b c Spearmint. Spearmint is by Carbine—Maid of the Mint. According to the latest quotations the eolt was quoted at 9to 2. Lally, the winner of the Newmarket Stakes, ruled as favourite. Last season Spearmint ran on three occasions, winning one race— the Great Foal Plate, of £835. He ran second to Black Arrow in the Champion Breeders' Bienniel Foal Stakes, and finished fourth in the Richmond Nursery Handicap. The places in the Blue Ribbon race were filled by Mr J. L. Dugd ale's ch c Picton, by Orvieto —Hecuba, aud the Duke of Westminster's b c Troutbeck, by Ladas - Rydal Mount. The success of " Old Jack's" son in the greatest race of the year will be hailed with, satisfaction by colonial sportsman, especially since he settled the opposition of such opponents as Lally, by Amphion —Miss Hoyden, the Newmarket winner and Derby favourite.
