Self-Reliance.
»—Mi (To the Editor). Sin, —I have read with much interest your leading article of even date, which refers to tho self-reliance of New Zealand's early colonists, and the present regrettable desire which some of outpublic bodies show to handle some of Carnegie's immense fortune. Did these j public bodies know of tho attendant misery entailed by Camegio in the amassing of his wealth, the writer thinks they would not be so eager to ask of Carnegie's store. Let them read of the homestead riots at Carnegie's steel works in Pennsylvania, let them consider the widows and orphans made by Carnegie's greed for gold, and then perhaps they will agree with your correspondent that the only place to erect a Carnegie library is on an of broken hearts in a sea of salt tears. — Yours, etc., , G. Havklock Greex. Palmerston, May 28.
