Footballers have started the season strenuously. Here are two paragraphs concerning "willing goes" lasj Saturday :—ln the Melrose-Oriental senior match p.'ayed on the Athletic Park, Wellington, on Saturday afternoon, knocks were hard and frequent. On one occasion an Oriental forward, apparently tried beyond his point of endurance, retaliated, and with fire m his eves, and clenched fists, deliberately cnased an opponc at round the scrum. Another noiiceable act was performed hv a Melrose back. The man had been tackled by an Oriental man, and whilst both players were on the ground, the Melrose player punched his opponent in the face, no doubt as a means of persuading him to let go. Several minor "incidents," too numerous to be mentioned, marred the game, but the referee apparently saw nothing. Christchurch Press says that at the meeting of the Bugby Union on Tuesday, a letter was receiyed from a touch judge in which he reports Grffiiu, a Richmond player. Griffin received a on the face which he accused A-tsiey, a Linwood player, of causing. After the match Ansley said he was not aware that he had marked Griffin, but if he had done so, he was very sorry. Griffin went away for a few minutes, and
then returned with practically the whole of the Richmond team, and hit Ansley twice in the mouth in quick succession. The touch judge says:—"l immediately stepped between the two and told Griffin that I should report him, whereupon several other members of the Richmond team knocked me over. At this stage of the proceedings a member of the Lin wood 111. team came along, and seeing what was happening, immediately set to work on Griffin and gave him a good thrashing. Again, sir, the language used by Griffin was very bad and abusive. If it is necessary to have witnesses to prove this charge, I shall be willing to produce them.'' A searching enquiry will be held into the incident.
