The Australian Tariff.

Duty on Spirits. (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Per Press Association ) MELBOURNE, May 24. The Tariff Commission has presenled progress reports on the wine-growing industry and industrial alcohol and methylated spirits. It recommends that the excise duty on spirit imported tor fortifying Australian wine be reduced from a shilling to sixpence per gallon, and makes a number of suggestions regarding the strength and forti fying of wines. In regard to methylated spirit, the Commission recommends that the duty ba reduced to sixpence per gallon, witii accompanying conditions as to sale and use. (Received May 25, at 9.58 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Tariff Commission's progress report on distillation states that there has been an immense increase in the production of spirits from molasses in New South Wales and Queensland. Australian distillers are at a great disadvantage in competing with imported spirits owing to the higher cost of labour, materials, production and thelocal prejudice against Australian productions. Thev recommended, in order to equalise conditions, that there should be a substantial difference in duty on imported and local spirits.
