Manawatu Racing Club.

■ For some time imst-lhe exeentwe of j Hie Manawatu ilaeina Club \i&* beca considering the advisability of pwreluising Its own toatlisator, ana the announcement that it has now been decided to take this stop will not cOmc as a surprise to member# of the club* It will be remembered that lust yew a sub-committee was appointed to m#pect audi report upon the " tote " i» u*o ®t the C.J.C. meetings, while later on the represent*itives of on cleetnc tot&Usator, an Australasian indention, visited Palmcrttoa and exhibited ft model "tote to stewards of the local club. As a result of mature consideration the executive has now decided to purchase one similar to that in use at Chratchurch. Machines of a like nature arc nl.so in use at jlawke's Buy and Masterton. The new macbine is claimed to have many advantages over the one the racecourse-habitue i« so familiar with. One of the most noticeable alterations }» that with the new machine the tintinabulatum of the bells will he nussed, the " tote " doing; its work silently. The hacking of the individual horse* can only be partly seen, and the total money invested is not dbelo«cd to the public while the money is being rung on. Another alteration with the new machine is that single tickets are not rung on, the operator ringing them on by tons, twenties, etc., as may be decided. The amount of money that can be handled depends entirely upon the facilities provided for handling it, and the number of pay-in windows.dcpends entirely upon trie size of the totalisatorhouse and the desired stall. Separate pay-out windows are provided, this, of course, doing away with a lot of the crush and push at present noticeable. Details as to staff, etc., have not yet been definitely decided upon by the club. It is expected the new " tote " will be installed in time for the summer races. _____
