At an inquest on Gunner liny, who shot himself at Fort Baliance yesterday, the wife of deceased deposed that her husband had been under the impression for some time past that the men sit the fort attributed the death of Gunner Palmer to him. Palmer was the victim of n gun explosion at the fort gome twelve months ago. When witness came home yesterday he took up a rifle, and. before" she could secure assistance he had shot himself. Sergeant Heath and Gunner Murdoch deposed that they had never heard that deceased had been blamed for the death of Palmer, which was purely accidental. A verdict of suicide 'luring temporary insanitv was returned. HOKITIKA, May 28. At the meeting of the local Exhibition Committee it was decided to make the strongest; recommendations to the Government in regard to doing the proposed one day's overland journey from Canterbury to West Coast within twelve hours, and to arrange for excursion fares on one inclusive ticket covering coach and railway journeys along the eoast, A Literary Committee was set up to prepare a nborfc early history of Westland, including tbo compilation of Maori records referring to the district. Indications point to the West Coast being very fittingly represented at the Exhibition. STRATFORD, May 23. At tlie meeting of representatives of the Dairy Factory Companies held here to-day, it was decided to form an Association to embrace the whole of Taranaki to discuss matters affecting the industry, and take conjoint action where ucecssary to express its views. A tremendous sea was raging along the coast to-day, and was increasing this afternoon. The Talune, from the south, resumed her voyage to Auckland at 1.30 p.m.. the jmssengers not being tendered. The W estralia arrived from the north at <1.45, and remains until Monday. Among the passengers carried on is Apirana Ngata, M.H K., who intended returning the same evening to Napier to attend the Te Aute Trust Commission. The Andrew Black Concert Party were to have proceeded to Auckland by the Talune.
