Mr Seddon in Australia
(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Per Press Association.) MELBOURNE. May 23. Mr Seddon has arrived. He was met by the Lord Mayor, the Town Clerk, some members of the State Ministry and was heartily welcomed. Mr Deakin intended to be present, but arrives late. Afterwards he saw Mr Seddon at the hotel. Received May 24, at 9.54 a.m. MELBOURNE, This Day. Mr Deakin states ho will not deal with the business matters to be- discussed with Mr Seddon till the latter returns from Adelaide. Mr Seddon, speaking at last night's banquet, said the question demanding attention was the future control of the New Hebrides and the other Islands of the Pacific. Wo should nod hesitate to let our opinions be known to Imperial Statesmen. These Islands must be British, The Panama canal would completely change the commerce of the Pacific, and he wanted Australians and New Zealanders to combine in saying— " There shall be only one Hag dominating the Pacific and that flag must be the Union Jack."
