Accidents and Fatalities.

At the inquest at Tikokino, (H. 8.), on Thursday, concerning the death of J,, J. Dowd, aired about 32, a native of New South Wales, a verdict was returned that, the deceased had been accidentally killed when felling a tree in the Gwavas hush. The evidence disclosed that strange carelessness marked the three acts that led up to the man's death. .Fie was an expert hushman, and when felling a tree, neglected to cut the ecarf deep enough, with the result that the tree, m falling, went in a different direction to that intended,, and got hung up in another tree. This tree the deceased proceeded to fell. Again the scarf.was not cut deep enough—a singular neglect, especially as, skilful bushman that- he was, he became so uneasy that he asked men to remain near while he got down the tree that, had the other hanging in it. At the first sound of the trees commencing to fall, the deceased neglected to jiot© the direction in which they were going, and he ran so that one of the trees caught him, with fatal results. Another yard and the unfortunate man would have been aafe.
