Polmngina County Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of tho Pohangina County Council held oa Saturday laat. There wore present ;~ Crs. Phillpott Hammond, Howie, Jackson, Osborne, Olliver and Browne, CORRESPONDENCE.
From G. Buckman, Apiti, offering to do certain work in Apiti township,— Accepted. From J. 11. Melton, Apiti, applying for payment for metal taken from bin pit.—Passed for payment. From tbo P.N. Timber Company, drawing attention to tbo state of the road at Obnrch Hill and also a culvert: near Mr Phillpofct'K.—Attended to. From M. L. Millett, Apiti, stating hla land was being flooded owing to the stoppage of the water table.—Preventive measures to be taken. From A. P. Ccotnbs, applying for, metal from Council'a pit.—Pcrumaion i granted. , From the District Committee N.Z. j Exhibition, Pahneraton, asking for a subsidy of £10 in aid of the cost of the | district rcprescntatfon at the exhibition. ; —No funds available. From F. L. Jackson, reporting ho assessed the valuo of that portion of McsarH Russell Bros.' farm cut oil for public purposes at £25.—Passed for payment. From the Pahneraton North Borough Council, stating its contribution of £350 towards tbo coat of tbo Pobangina bridge would bo paid on the completion of the b rid go. From the Lands and Survoy Department, enquiring if anything had been dono to enable Measrs Barrand Jefi'eriea to get titles to their sections. —Duo enquiry to be made. From the Treasury, stating that the £200 loan for the Ferry road protective work?, also £050 for same work and £200 for Holly's Hill protective works were now available. From same, xtating that the loan of £1000 for work on Coulter'a Lino had boen provisionally approved, also that loan of £1000 for forming footpaths in Apiti had been provisionally approved. From the Roads Department, stating the application for a grant to repair Branch and Main Itidge Roads would receive consideration when the estimates for the current v«ar wore frtmed. FINANCE.
The clerk reported the receipt of the following amounts during tho past month :—General rates, £57 ; special, £20 5s and sundry accounts making a total of £103 10a lid. Bank balances are as follows: General account, Dr, .£BB3 2s id , No. 2 account, Dr, £ISSO ; No. J, Cr, £271 5s id. Riding accounts —Awnhou, Dr, £2(>o 3s 3d ; Coal Creek, Dr, £'382 15s 7d ; Mangaonc, Cr, £82 16s 3d; Mangapiko, Dr, £510 17s; Pohangina, Dr, £370 13s 2d ; Tamalci, Dr, £573 13d b'd ; Umutoi, I)r, £1201 h lid. Hypothecated thirds, Cr, £1304.
The overseer reported on the general maintenance work carried out in the county during the past month. It was recommended that slip.s be removed oiT the Forest He serve Koad. Tenders have been culled for the delivery of Loot) yards of metal in the Coal Creek riding. It was recommended tiaat the Council and the Timber Company come to some arrangement with regard to the maintenance of roads in the Cmutoi. It was recommended that a man be employed for three months to assist the roadman iu. the Mangapiko to clean out water tables. There are dangerous holes in the Norsewood and .Main Cross roads that require filling in. with metal.—Adopted.
MISCELLANEOUS. The Council considered in committee a motion by Cr Howie, seconded by Cr Osborne, that the clerk to the Council bedtsmi-sed. The motion waa lost, Crs Philpotts, Hammond, Jackson, and 01iiver voting against it, and Cra Ilovvie, Osborne, and Browne for it. An amendment by Cr Jackson, seconded by Cr Philpotta, that the matter of Mr Wheeler'K dismissal be not entertained at present, bus that tiny charges there may bo against him bo formulated by members in (all detail, and that the same be brought up at another meeting for consideration, was carried. Two weeks were allowed in which to formulate charges, if any. Several accounts for expenses of witnesses attending the recent Gorgo Com* mission were parsed for payment. Messrs F. Arbon and Bauckham did not claim any expenses and were accorded a vote of thanks. A report was read from tho Iviwitea County Council with regard to tho erection of bridge# over the Oroua river and London's ford and Coulter's line. The Kiwitoa Council was not in favour of granting any contribution towards the cost of the proposed bridges. Crs Hammond and Qsbcrno and Mr JUounthwaito will wait upon tho Kiwitoa Couacil at its nest meeting in furtherance of tho matter. Cr Hammond stated all the settlers interested were perfectly unanimous in their desire to have the bridges erected and were quite willing to have a special rating district constituted. It was decided that tenders bo called for tho lease of Reserve No. 31, Block 6, on the Council's usual terms. Applications will be invited for the position of ranger in the llimitoi district ; also in the Taniaki. Pohangiua. Awahou, and Mangaone ridings; applicants to state terms. Mr A. WagstalT was granted permission to form a track to his section subject to the overseer's approval. The engineer was instructed to repair tho ftorsewood and Main Cross roads where required. It was regretted that in the present state of the finances the Council was unable to make any contribution towards the cost of the district representation at the New Zealand Exhibition. Necessary repairs will bo carried out at the Creamery road bridge and charged to balance of loan. It was decided that tho balance of money in Loan No. 20 be spent on formation on Cono road, also that the Public Works Department be asked to spend Government grant of £'50 on the same road at once ; the work to be done in small contracts. Necessary repairs will be effected at the north-east ond of Alt. Richards road at a cost not exceeding £25. Accounts totalling £560 lis were passed for payment.
