(Per Prpss Association ) CHRISTCHURCH, May 19. At a meeting of the Cricket Council at Christchurch on Friday, a cablegram was received trom Major "Wardill asking what the Council would give for a fifty days' tour of the English team in New Zealand. A discussion took place as to whether it would be possible to hold one of the Australian English test matches here during Exhibition season, and it was decided to offer £1500 for the fifty days' tour of the English team, £2000 for a fifty days' tour and one test match between Australia and England, to be played in Christchurch, or, as an alternative, £1250 plus 90 per cent of the net proceeds o' the test match, the tour to be completed before March, 1907 DUNEDIN. May 20.

At the inquest touching the death of William James Mearns, railway shunter, who was killed by a truck passing over him while engaged in a flying shunt m the railway yard, the evidence showed that Mearns was trying to push waggons apart when his hand slipped and he fell between the waggons, and four wheels passed over hiu-. The inquest concerning the death of Ivatherine Theresa Chynoweth, the victim of the tram accident at Kent Terrace last Wednesday night, was held yesterday. The evidence regarding the movements of deceased and her companions on Wednesday night was rather vague, but circumstances pointed to death being the result of pure accident, and a verdict was returned accordingly. The motorman of the car concerned was commended for his promptitude in bringing the car to a standstill.
