Attempted Suicide

An Auckland Case.

Etta Utting.the young married woman who attempted to commit suicide by j swallowing a dozen doses of toothache j cure, came before Mr Middoli, S.M., i tbitt afternoon for sentence. When tho evidence was heard on Monday, a young man deposed that the accuscd, when recovering from the effects of tho poison, was asked why she took it, and replied " Because I love you." This was indignantly denied by the woman, who behaved in bucli an cxcited state in Court that the Magistrate remanded her for medical examination as to tho state of her mina. She was reported by tfie prison surgeon to bo quite aane. Her husband, a young man, told his Worship that they had been married two years ; and seven months, and his wife left him seven weeks ago. He wished her to return, and would make arrangements to provide her with a home. Mrs lifting said she would return if her husband's treatment would improve, and Mr I'ttiim replied that lie could prove that no wife had been better treated.

The Magistrate reminded the accused that, she was charged with a serious offence, for which she could be imprisoned. However, lie cud not want to Bend her to gaol, and as she promised to return to her husband she would be convicted and ordered to eotne up for sentence if called upon. If she behaved she would never be called upon, and he hoped she saw the foolishness of her action.
