Burnt at Sea
Woolshii) totally Destroyed. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This day. Messrs G. H. Scales and Co, woolbrokers and shipping agents, received a cable from London this morning, from their agents there, intimating that the barque Pitcairn Island, which left here for London on March 19, had been totally destroyed by fire at sea. No particulars were given but it is surmised that the crew are safe, The vessel loaded at Dunedin and Wellington, and had about 5600 bales of wool aboard, besides a quantity of tow. The cargo was yalued at about £115,000, which was covered by insurance. Most of the local offices are affected. Captain Fletcher was in command.
