Action by Labourites. Overthrow of Government Possible. (Eeceived May 19, at 8.10 a.m.) LONDON, May 18. The House of Lords arrived at its decision on the Alien Labor Bill while the House of Commons was voting money which the House of Lords expends. The indignant Labourites, by way of protest, moved the reducticn of a vote pioposmg to cancel the cost that had not been dealt with under the vot«s.
Mr Keir Hardy, in moving the amendment, blamed the Government for not accepting Lord Lansdowne's offer. He asked how long the Government intended to ( countenance the existence of the House of Lords. The incident raised tlie whole question whether the democracy was real or merely a show, Mr G. Whitely, member for Pudsey, in the absence of the Liberal leaders, referred to the rejection of the Bill as a regrettable incident, but said it was an unofficial member's Bill, and there was no reason why the Government should assume charge of it. So many new members supported the amendment, that the defeat of the Government might conceivably have been engineered, but Mr Lewis Rarcourt eventually secured the withdrawal of the amendment.
