On Monday evening the installation of Mr G. A. Simpson r»s Mayor took place at the Council Chambers', and Mr If. G. Gowcr, the retiring Mayor, w»g presented with a handsome dock and set of silver spoon* as a memento of his recent wedding. Complimentary referetiew was abouiade to \f r Gornvr'* good work during his tmn of oiiiee. The Fox ton Literary and Debating Soeicty held its usual fortnightly meeting last evening. There was a good attendance of members. Mr K. Moore occupied the chair. The subject for the evening wan a debate on the question Does modern scientific research tend to strengthen faith in the Christian Revelation '! ' The Rev. A, D. Spiers led in the affirmative, seconded by Mr F, W. Frankland ; and Mr VV. S. Stewart was the leader on the negative side, being seconded by Mr R. Moore. Most of the speeches were excellent, especially that of Mr Frankland, who spoke* at some icngth on the relation between Christianity and metaphysics, endeavouring to show that the study of the latter strengthened faith iu the former. Good and undeniable arguments were aba put forth by the negative eido. On a vote being taken the affirmatives si!::cei;ded by a majority of one veto
