White Fine Borer.
DUNEDIN, May 10.
A few days ago Mr J as. Allen, M.H.R., wrote to the Minister for Agriculture regarding the depredations of white pine " borer," which seems to bo turning attention to red pine and even bluet'um. Mr Allen fears that unless something can bo done to prevent these depredations many wooden buildings in Dunedin will bo rendered worthless, and he asks that, unless some of tho officers in the Agricultural Department know how to check tho u borer," an expert be sent to make an examination, with the view to providing a remedy. In connection with this matter Dr. Benham, professor of biology at the University, states that, as the trouble commenced before tho pine tree is sawn up, it is difficult to combat the The grubs which do harm may live for months, or perhaps a year, in wood, eating through it all the time. Professor Benham cannot suggest a cheap method of cure, but says no doubt the Government biologist will be able to do so.
