State Coal.

The Minister of Klines was asked by Mr Flatman yesterday if the Government will establish depots or agencies for the sale of coal from the State coal mines in each seaport town in the colony, with a view of allowing all classes of the community the option of obtaining cheap fuel ?'.-.,

Mr McGowan said he could only repeat the statement he made when a similar question was asked by another hon. member—viz., that " The output of coal from the State .mines is not yet sufficient to meet general demands in addition to the requirements of the railways and other Government departments; but when the properties at Point Elizabeth and Seddonville are fully-developed the question of establishing depots for retailing the coal to consumers will receive the consideration of the Government." In towns comparatively remote from the West Coast ; freight charges were responsible-for a large proportion of the cost of the coal, and where such towns ■ were situated near a coalmining centre the local article could be delivered to consumers at a considerably lower price than that at which it would be possible to retail coal from the State mines.
