The semi-final for the Mayor's Cup between the Awabou and Kiwi teams was played on Saturday. As is usual when these teams meet, considerable interest^ was evinced in the game, consequently a fair crowd of spectators turned out to view the combat. Awahou kicked off and their forwards immediately got to work, but Kiwi disputed every inch of the ground and occasionally rallied and shifted the scene of play to their opponents' and from which it would gradually comeback by srenuous f r ward work. On the whole there was little to choose between the two teams, both sides conceding only one force in the first spell, which ended with no score. In the second spell, Desmond re arranged bis team (Kiwi) slightly and they seemed to work better. The Kiwi forwards played a hard, determined game and had slightly the better of the second spell, although their gritty opponents played up well. Five minu ea from time a miskiok by an Awßnou back let Eobinsonin near tbe corner. Broad failed with the kick and a well-con-tested game ended in a win for Kiwi by 3to nil. A marked improvement was shown in the spirit in which the game was played and the pleasing sight of a player helping an opponent up after he had been put down was witnessed on more than one occasion, For Kiwi tho pick of the forwards was Herbert, Eakina, Broad and P. Sweeney, while m the baek3 P. Bobmson, Smith and Puki played good games. For Awahou all the forwards played well the most consistent being. S. Wright, D. O'Brien, J. Lee apd Jefferies, while in the backs J. Louisson, J. Coley and F. Eobinson performed best. Mr Keriona refereed impartially. JNext Saturday the final will be played, between Huia and Kiwi. It is rumoured that many iforowhenua and Alanawatu reps, will help both teams. Mr Peter Robinson is at present engaged in fitting up a Eob Eoy canoe, with a propellor and driving gear after the style of his own boat, for Mr Alf. Fraser. He has also completed building about a'dozen flat bottomed boats for pleasure parties. A number of Palmerston visitors have the boats booked for Labour Day.
A punt belonging to Mr Jupp was ioading coal alopgside one of the steamers ac tbe wharf on Thursday. When left at ni_;ht she had about 10£ tons of coal on board and in the morning it was found that she had sunk by the side of the steamer. The heavy load had caused the water to leak in through a hole which is usually above water with the result stated.. No special difficulty is anticipated in raising her again. Now tliar the cycling track in Victo-, ria Park has been repaired, it has a much-improved appearance. Lately a number of the committee inspected and rolled it and satisfaction was expressed at the state it is in. The Athletic Club should have a successful meeting on the JLing's Birthday. Now that the summer months are approaohing it behoves the authorities to have tbe beach toad put in order for traffic. During'the cummer months great numbers of visitors from other parts visio the beach and ocoupy the houses at the Sanatorium. At present tbe drawback is the want of a good road to the Sanatorium; The local people should move in the matter and not allow Foxton's most important pleasure resort to fall into disfavour all for the want of a little energy on the part of the local authorities. \
