The Trades and Labour Council have decided to arrange that a deputation of one member from each affi i_ted Union shall wait upon the Minister for Labour to protest against the opinion expressed by the President of the. Arbitration C.urt, that all caseß alleging breaches of the award, should be brought- by: the Labour Department, instead of by the officers of the Union concerned.: At a meeting of, the employers of the various building trades it was decided to urge the.Government to amend the law so as to make it compulsory that all Deraons ernployiag mon to erect buildings shall pay the rate of wages and observe all the conditions sat out in tho Court awards NELSON, Sept. 30." - A public debate was held to-night between advocates of State control and advocates of prohibition, the speakers being for the former, Rev. McKee Wright and Mr H. Atmore. and for the latter, Rev. Header and J. Franklyn. A resolution m favour of State control was carried by 447 votes to 235. AUCKLAND Sept. 30. The South British Insurance Company's report and balance-sheet for the yoar ended August 31st, shows a surplus in the revenue account of £76,101 Is. Tho following appropriations have been made:—Reinsurance fund £10,000, reserve fund £10,000, and investment fluctuation fund £5000. The directors recommend the payment of a dividend for the second half of the year at the rate of 3. 6d per share, making the total dividend for the year 6s net. The amount carried forward to' next year's account is £58,728 10s 2d.
