Boxing Championship.

CHRISTCHtrRCH, Sept 27. The Australasian amateur boxing championships, under the auspices of the New Zealand BoxiDg Association, were begun to : night in the presence of a very large audience. The boxing throughout was as good as ever seen here. The Australian visitors created 4 particularly favorable impression;'. The only championship' decided was the'middle weight, in which, owing to two withdrawals, J. M. Griffin (N.Z.) and G. Graham (N.S.W.) were, the only' candidates, the New Zealander winning; Following are the details':—
Middleweight Championship—J. M. Griffin (N.Z.) Hwt 3£lbs, met J. Graham (N.8.W.) list 3Jb. . Griffin at once assumed the aggressive, bitting . with tremendous force. He knocked Graham down three times in; the first round, but the latter was very plucky and took out fcbe punishment, replying effectively. The referee stopped the bout in the third round,. awarding the championship to Griffin.
Light Weight Championship— First round: J. Bagley (Queensland), 9st 13ilb, met T. Kicharda .(N.Z.-),*.9at 71b. Bagley did the leading throughouD, Richards apparently waiting for a knock out; but the Queenslander showed excellent defence, and was nwardod a win.
. D. Porbury (NS.W) 9&t 101b, met P. Hureombe (N.Z) 9st 13J1b... The bout was. characterised by continuous wrestling, Hureombe invariably clinching through ducking to avoid punishment. Porbury had the better of the exchanges all through, and won. . Featherweight championship—First round ; J. Dowridge (Queensland);.Sst 131b, met C. Griffin (N.Z.) Bst 13Jlb. Dowridge showed a wonderful knowledge of boxing, giving an almost perfect display, whilst his opponent hit wildly. He was at Dowridge's mercy early in the second round, and the referee stopped the bout, the decision going to the Queenslander.
W. Tobin (N.Z.), Bstllilb, met A. Thompson (N.Z), Bst 121b. This bout was a mill devoid of science, and Thompson having the better all through proved the winner. . ■
In the novice competition, first round, A. McConneH beat G-. W. Halt, E. Morley beat JP. Mills, E Goodham beat B.Granger, J. Ciark beat A. Sidthorpe,' The tournament will be continued on Thursday.
