GISBORNE, Sept 26.
A case of importance to those interested in dairying was decided to-day, being Arthur Morgan v. the Poverty Bay Co-operative Dairying Company, a claim for £49 12s 4d. An amalgamation of companies had led to a reduction of the expenses, and the question was whether the manager of such company was engaged on a yearly hiring. Evidence had been taken in other dairying centres, and the Magistrate stated: "It is clear that at the time of plaintiff's engagement no term was mentioned, and that 'being so I am of opinion, upon the evidence as to the custom in the particular business for which he was engaged, that it was a yearly hiripg, and therefore that the plaintiff could not legally be discharged, nor could hia salary be reduced, till the expiration of the current year. Plaintiff is entitled to judgment for the amount olaimed, costs of Court and other expenditure (including the takiDg of evidence at Eltham,£lo 3s 9d;, totalling £16 9s 9d. "A= simple agreement," he added, '■ would have obviated any trouble." WELLINGTON, September 26. Tbe recently instituted Council of Churches to-night passed a resolution favouring Bible teaching in schools, and the placing of the questions before the people by a referendum in an unambiguous manner. While not committing itself to the principle of absolute prohibition, the Council approved of the no-license policy, and pledged its influence in support of a course harmonising with Christian principles and the true interests of humanity. CHRISTCHURCH, September 26.. At the adjourned inqueßt to-day on the illegitimite child of Caroline Hautz, which was born on September 10th, and found lying dead beside its mother soon after, medical evidence ascribed the death to asphyxia, which might have been due tb. overlaying. ? Posßibly, but not probably, it was accidental. A verdict was returned that death was" due to suffocation, but that there was insufficient evidence to show the cause of the suffocation.
