Ashhurst District.

(To the Editor)

Sir,—l notice, in reply to my letter, a person signing himself " Hiwinui," msikes a. lot of rambling -statements about biliousness, stinking;fish, etc., but 'does not refute one single : argument in my letter. Evidently "-Hiwinui" takes it for granted that I am connected with business, for the simple reason that most Ashhurst residents are,'in some way or other/connected with business, but I do not think, 'Sir, that any person reading "Hiwinui's" letter would have the audacity to accuse him cf knowing anything of business, nor does it follow, Sir, that because a person signs himself I "Hiwinui," that he must necessarily reside there. There seems to have been an exchange of ideas between your local correspondent and " Hiwinui," with the result that they have become very much mixed.

I do not wish to put a barb wire fence round any one to keep them in, and would far rather see "Hiwinui" get out into the world a little and obtain some broader views, instead of making such rambling statements as "stinking fish"—a phrase that has been hawked round so long now that it stinks worse than the fish. We in Ashhurst, sir, are -not .concerned about what Hiwinui people ao with the money obtained by their loan; (let them spend it to the best advantage arid where it is necessary) ; but we are concerned about the money spent in Ashhurst, and consider .£6OO spent on the works in present schedule is unnecessary. If, sir, -instead of forming a lot? of 'roads and footpaths that are not needed and very rarely used,? a drain was put frornthe rivor bed terrace to the Commercial Hotel corner so that the town could be drained, thus preventing the lower, end of the town. layihg.-under water, after a little rain, and an army of health inspectors coming out condemning it, the loan would receive more support in Ashhurst. 1 am, &c,

Resident.
