. Colonel' Porter, recently in charge of the Canterbury volunteer district, has been appointed -Inspector of Rifle Clubs and actin'g-Under-Secretary for Defence. Mr John Molden, who was lost in the bush at Akatarawa, was found by a search party, all well.
AUCKLAND,.This day. : Two more police raids were made.upon Chinese premises, with the intention of suppressing opium smoking, last night. It is alleged a Chinaman was caught in each house. Seizures of opium and utensils were made. Prosecutions will probably follow.
NAPIER; This 'day.
Hannah's boot shop was burglariously entered last night and an attempt made to blow the safe open with dynamite, but the charge only blew the outer caster off, and the burglars then decamped without securing anything of value. A youth named Edward 'Carlton' Luff, railway clerk, was before the Court today on a charge of tampering with a postal package at Kaikoura. The accused was remanded till Monday, on bail.

Richard Thomas Wheeler,, an old journalist and one of the founders of the American Order of Oddfellows, of which he was Grand Master for three years, died this morning.
WELLINGTON, This 'day.. Five head of Kerry cattle and five Dexter cattle, consigned to the New Zealand Government, arrived by the Tongariro to-day. It is understood the animals will be exhibited at the Palmerston show.
