Received September 27, at 9.35 a.m. SYDNEY, This a a y< The Government have decided to experiment, on a small scale, with Pasteur virus for the destruction of rabbits. If satisfactory, it will be used extensively. It has been discovered that the sea water used in the streets leaves a saline deposit on the tramlines, thus interfering with the electric current.

An affray occurred in Little Bourkestreet between rival. Chinese factions. Knives and revolvers were freely used, eight being injured. Speaking at Ballarat, Mr Reid said he welcomed a tariff enquiry, but the Commission must not be limited—it must take in the whole Commonwealth. The whole tariff was not confined to particular industries. Mr Deakin, in endorsing this view, added that since the elections the prospects of preferential trade had, unfortunately, not brightened. But seeing what Canada had done, Australians should not be left behind. It seemed to him that they might, without delay and with the consent of both paxties, have the question considered by Parliament.
