Borough Council.
The adjourned ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present—The Mayor (in the chair), and Crs Haydon, Armstrong, France, Tolley, Jack, Essex, Holben and Browning. CORRESPONDENCE. From T. JLilsby, complaining of two dangerous places caused by a leak in the earthenware pipes, and the other by the subsidence of a pipe dram at Fitzherbert —The engineer said one place had been attended to, and the other, would receive his immediate attention.
From Town Clerk, Feilding, suggesting that Mr Martin be asked to draw up model by-laws, and askint? Council to subscribe to cost.—Received, writer to be iuformed tbat Council was at present revising its own by-laws.
From J. Gemmell, applying for refund of advance for water.—Granted.
Fro.m caretbker of Cemetery, asking for assistance. —Referred to Cemetery Committee with power to act.
From Orchestral Society, asking for permission to open Opera House, the Sooiety undertaking to hand back for distribution amongst looal charities all monies received above actual expensesReferred to Opera House Committee for favourable consideration. Several councillors were of opinion that the local Society should have profeience for the opening night.
From C. Weeks, with resignation to take effect from.end of September.— Accepted.
From secretary of Rifle Association, thanking Council for subsidy of £25 and offering to show Reserves Committee where it was intended to put in trench. Referred to Reserves Committee. ;.
From residents Joseph-street, asking the Council to take over the street and extend water to their properties.—On Cr Essex's motion, seconded by -Cr Holben, it was decided to inform the residents of Joseph-street that the Council are 'devising a scheme for extended water reticulation in which scheme Joseph-street, when taken over, is included, the work to be carried out immediately loan is authorised by ratepayers. ..-.-.;
From H. S. Fitzherbert, asking for' refund of half cost of a footpath asphalted several Syears ago? io? Broud street.—Held over '
From residents of Victoria street, applying for refund of advance for sewerage and footpath, totalling JEllß.—On Cr Haydon's motion; it was decided to pay the money when the second instalment otrates begins to come in
From J. Page, asking permission to put horse in one of Square enclosures on Saturday afternoons.—Request refused From" Beautifying Association, stating that 1^ acres of No 6 Reserve was required by thb Society, and asking Council to take steps-to preserve the flowor3 .and'shrubs in the Square ReservesReceived
From W. Archibald suggesting various amendments to the public conveniences!— Received, Mr Archibald to be thanked for his suggestions. From Slack Bros, asking for lease of part of old racecourse for. one year or more.—Held over pending settlement of abattoir question.
