The Square Reserves.
Theft of Flowers.
The Borough Council last night received a letter frorhthe secretary of the Beautifying Society, asking that steps should be taken to preserve the flowers and shrubs in the reserves.
■ Cr Essex said that since that letter was written plants had been stolen from the fountain reserve.- It was not fair to the people who took an interest in the beautifying, of the Square that this should be allowed to continue. He certainly thought, if they could not get people to refrain from taking the flowers and plants' they should lock the place up after dark. Only the other day a man going through. the reserve stopped, and picked? a button-hole.? : Unfortunately the ratepayer who saw "him> did'",'not 're-' port the matter, or an example' could' have been made. He thought the police should be asked to pay particular attention to these reserves.
Cr Armstrong was of opinion that one of the sources of the trouble was the encouragement given by teachers to children to bring flowers to school for ornamentation purposes. It was; a mistake, as; it led the children to take flowers from.gardens. He had experience of this himself.
.. On Cr Hay don's motion it was decided to call the attention of the police to the matter, and to advertise that a reward of £o would be given for information leading to the conviction of any person or persons found plucking flowers or plants hi the two: central reserves or at the Victoria Esplanade.l : ,-
