Charges fur Ad mission.

:: - Edmundyßuckingham' (Mr -Mowlem) was charged at the S:M. Court this morning before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., with holding;.an entertainment in.. the Zealandia Hallon Sunday, 18th inst., to ■which a charge was made for admission; Sergt. Stagpoole prosecuted. ?: Constable De Loree stated that he went to the hall on the night in question and'heard a man. stating it was Is- for admission upstairs. In answer to witness the man said he was looking after the f interests of the -Hall vpeople. -The man'snain'e wasGlubb.;.;Witness .-went upstairs and.while theresaw the.wife?of the defendantr'with a:box of silver-coins.. Witness glanced in the»box and saw.that it. contained two and one shilling, pieces. She told witness that: no special charge was; made, people /■ gave what they liked but were expected to give one, shilling. Witness heard Mrs Buckingham tell people that admission was Is. . At another door a man named Humphries told witness that people were supposed.-to pay Is, and that it was advertised on a calico sign outside the hall. At the same time Humphries said people could give what they liked for admission. -

During cross-examination, witness admitted that he • had paid eight different visits to the. doorkeepers at the hall on the night stated. He also acknowledged having torn down the calico sign outside the hall for the purposes of evidence. It was subsequently returned to the defendant. . " . •

Cornelius McGrath also gave evidence in support of the charge, and the case was adjourned till Monday morning, at 9 o'clock. -
