A Tohunga Fined.

HAMILTON. September^!. At.the Magistrate's- Court, Ngaruawahia, yesterday, Wiromu Te Whitu, alias Paddy Began, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person without visible means of support. Ha was also charged under the Maori Councils Act with practising Tohungaism. Evidence was given by a number of Maoris and half-castes showing the accused had been treating diseases in different places in the Waikato, including Mahuta's Pah at Waahi, near Huntly. Several patients were women suffering from internal diseases. Ac cused entered into improper relations With them. Other cases wero treated by hot baths and hau hau incantarion. Mahuta had written to accused asking him to discontinue the practice. No evidence was given of the dea£h of patients.
Accused, who admitted three previous convictions of theft, was sentenced to one month's hard labour on the first charge and execution was stayed on condition that he returned to his tribe at Ngatikaua.
The magistrate stated that if any more tohungaism was practised he would impose a sentence of three months.
