Ashhurst Notes.

(From our own Correspondent.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the Domain Board was held on Monday evening, Messrs J. H. Vincent (chairman), Thos. Lowes,. G.S. Bumble and Geo.-Searle being present. An apology for non-attendance was received from ■Mr Hanlon. Correspondence was received from the Palmerston North Painters' and Decorators' Union re holding' picnic in the Domain on Labor Day, October 12. A copy of lease, Governor to Racing Club, was also received. ' Accounts amounting to 9s were passed for payment. . It was resolved that the Painters' and Decorators' Union be granted permission, under certain conditions, to hold the Labor Day picnic in the Domain. Immediately after the above meeting the Cemetery Trustees met, the same gentlemen being -present, Mr Thos. Lowes in the chair. •Accounts amounting to £7 7s were passed for payment. It was decided to place a 600 gallon tank at the house for general-use in connection with the cemetery, also to obtain material for re-painting the house. Arrangements were made so that all unfenced and new graves will be pegged off with pegs showing number.of each. A boy is required to deliver the paper in this district. ' The Cricket Club held a meeting when it was decided to obtain permission from the Domain Board to improve the recreation reserve by fixing, up a pitch, etc. The secretary of the Cricket Club, Mr Bowater, is prepared to receive members' subscriptions or any donations. It is reported that there is a likelihood of telephonic communication being effected between Apiti and the Salisbury block. It is understood the settlers in and about the block desired the telephone communication, to be with the Pohangina township," hut unfortunately, owing to then meeting obstacles where they might have expected assistance, the Apiti route appears the only alternative. In connection with the proposed loan for work in the Hiwinui and Otangaki Ridings, it is probable that polling booths will be at the Public Library, Ashhurst; Mr Bogun's, Palmerston road; and Hiwinui school. It has been mentioned that the making of the Grove road will divert trade from Ashhurst, but how, when, and wherefrom is a mystery requiring a lump of explanation. A very interesting football match, the last of the season, will be played on the local ground between the * Huias, of Palmerston, and the local team on Saturday.
