'J'be.- Council' on' meeting went■•• into committee to consider, withtheßorough Solicitor, several Municipal matters On resuming in open Council the following motions were carried:- "That the Borough solicitor be instructed to reply to Mr S W. Luxford's letter re fencing and bridge on the Kawau drain that the Council has no responsibility m either case; (2), That the Mayor and Crs Essex and Armstrong attend, with the Borough solicitor, at the S.M. Court on Thursday to watch the case in connection with the objections lodged against the proposed site of the abattoirs on the Foxton Line."

REPORTS

The Borough Inspector reported having notified owners of eight houses in regard to hedges overhanging the footpaths. Six of them had complied with his instructions and promises had been made to have the trimming attended to in both the remaining cases. —Adopted.

The Finance Committee recommended the Council to increase the wages of the two senior nightwatchmen to lis per diem, also lhat there is not sufficient information before the Committee to warrant a grant to, the Rifle Association. - . -

The Reserves Committee recommended ploughing and sowing the remainder of the No. 6 Reserve not required by the Beautifying Association ; that with regard to the reported destruction of titoki trees on one of the reserves, the Engineer be instructed to take the necessary action to conserve, the interests of the Borough. That the use of the Sports Ground "on November 9th be granted to the Palmerston Brass Band Committee, subject to the Engineer precluding the use of such portions as may be deemed necessary, That water be laid to the reserves in the Square, It was also decided to recommend that the cycle track be put in order.—Adopted.

The Public Works Committee reported that, in connection with the application of S. W Luxford for improvements to the Eawau drain, the Borough solicitor be asked to give an opinion as to the liability of the Council in the matter. That before any objection be taken to Dr. Yalintme's criticisms in regard to the alleged faulty closet connections, the Council be recommended to appoint a. sub-committee to investigate the objections raised and take evidence from the Health Department and the contractor for the work, such suh-committee to consist of Crs Jack, Holben, France,Armstrong, and the Mayor, and report to the Council. That Dr. Valmtine be asked to supply a copy of the agreement requiring twelve .months' notice to cancel Inspector Perry's appointment. That a special meeting of the Council be called to discuss the question of revising the Borough by-laws.

MISCELLANEOUS.

The engineer was instructed to take steps to prevent the overflow of water at the Square fountain; also, to have the footpath round the band rotunda tarred and sanded, an iron fence erected round the rotunda and the building and fence painted.

Ifc was decided to invite applications for the position of gardener in the Square Reserves at a salary of £100 annually. Cr Haydon moved, on behalf of Cr Holben, that the Borough gravel pit in Scnndia street be opened to all ratepayers and a royalty of sixpence per yard charged.—Carried.

Regulations for working the pits were suggested by Cr Essex and adopted on his motion.

Several licenses were granted, and the meeting terminated.
