Palmerston Band Bazaar.
If the fcUondftiiee nt the Palmerston 1 North Brass Bund's bazaaV laat night \ may be taken as a criterion of what it will be during the- continuance of the fixture, then the most BaDguine expeotatlons of tho members vill be realised a-d the hsztsr prove the huge success lt-b hoped it will be. . Long before the Major opened the proceedings, the, theatre was comfortably fall| arid by' eight o'clock the fiobr was crowded and: y.sifcors were still arriving. The Mayor." in. opening ..the f unction;1 said the .band was one of >he injtimtibnß'df the town,! but for all that, had received encouragement of a very cool nature, .'from time to time. It had had to support itself,, and the bazaar was one of its endeavours to carry out its desire •to be free of debt, with a little help from the public. He referred1 to the leading part taken by the town in connection with brass band music in'the colons caoipp'in us tu. which the band had bneo able n fo!d its own. At tho lirnfj competition in Pi»Juier m.»h Kort'i the pr-jfita. h>uV been Jdobi), or . which the Uad band had receiveo. £50, the r : ;«i oi the money going to other loc.il insiuutione. Since then the band had erected a band room and had purchased new instruments at a coat of £4<ao. At the present time their debit balance was £416, but they had assets totalling something like £700. He pointed out tho town, from time to time, received the beneßt of the band's playing and it was only fair they should be assisted to. reliave' themselves of debt/ Reference was made to the efforts that he was sure the ladies in charge of the stalls would mate m the extinguishment of the liabilities/and continuing the Mayor- said ho had been asked to make an explanation. The busy "man in the street" had been saying that in repeating their fancy dress- costume match at the show grounds to-morro«v, the Municipal Band was animated with a desire to injure the bazaar. So far from this being a fact, or that they wished to injure the band id any particular, lie understood the Municipal Band had "decided to play in fancy costume in front of the theatre tomorrow night (applause), thus showing their goodwill- in a ' very practical manner. Beferring also to the granting oE a subsidy to the Municipal Band by the Borough Council the Mayor said the band was a young one and required set-' ting on its feet, financially, as well as the Palmerston band. The subsidy had not prevented goodwill between the two bands and lie hoped there would not be any rivalry between them except that of music. He then formally declared the bazaar open.
The executive of the bazaar desire to express their thanks to the postmaster for fixing up a telegraph and telephone service within the theatre.
Business was particularly good last night, a big run being made on all the stalls, while the side shows were excellently patronised. ■
Mrs W. T. Wood Ins expressed her willingness to arrange a children's fancy dress ball to further augment the Band's funds, and Band Sergt. Holben announced the fact at the bazaar durine the evening. Mr W. T. Wood had to attend a meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board, and waa therefore unable to be present. The band, however, received a telegram from bim in whioh he expressed the hope thac the bazaar would be a great sncces?.
