A Dreadful Scene.
The Assault on Port Arthur.
LONDON, September 19. The Times' correspondent with Kuroki says the scene of carnage on the east bank of the Taitse is unparalleled in European warfare.
For days the wounded of both sides lay in the open to die, It was impossible to succour them within the zone of cross fire. "..'•'■■
_ It is semi-officially announced in Berlin that the coaling of Russians ships at sea is purely a private business at the contractors' risk. The Kaiser's Government is no more concerned with the question than the British Government is with the sale of Cardiff coal. - .
The Russians are experiencing difficulty in obtaining Chinese provisions and transports owing to their action in forcibly detaining 400 ; non-conibatants -who were consequently killed at Liaoyang. Preparatory to the assault of Port Arthur the Japanese sent a few men urgin» surrender. General Stoessel declined to receive the messengers. _ The latest indications are that the besiegers are hastening the operations.
