In tho Temuka assault and robbery case, tho jury, after an hour aud a half retirement, returned a verdict of not guilty, handing iv also a slip of paper deprecating the amount of drunkenness allowed in streets that tho cane hnd disclosed.
Nicholas Gcstro, aged 22, of AVellington, was acquitted on a charge of forgery iind uttering a cheque in Timaru In 1900, by which he got a suit of clothes and ,t!l change. Tho tailor and his .ssist-'.nt identified him, but counsel for tho defence saved him by simple " anihropomctrical measurements." Accused was mesurcd in Court as for tho suit, and found to be a smaller man than the person who goi tbe suit mid paa.ed the cheque.
In divorce jurisdiction, a decree nisi was granted in AVntts v AYatts, of Fairlie, wife's petition, on the ground of habitual drunkenness and ill-usage AVellington, .lime 11. Tlie rctun of tho quantity and value of frozen meat and dairy produce entered for oxport from New Zealand last month shows tho following totals:— Butter, 13,130cwt, valued at J_63,428; ehesso, 7603cwt, valued at £16,652; b.ef, 38,309cwt, valued at £42,413; carcases of mutton, 198,466, valuod at .Gi1t),348; legs and pieco3 of mutton, l-l,3slc\vt, valued at £16,148; lamb, Ol.Slocwt, valued at __._42,.5_. The quantity of butter sent away was nearly double that oxportod in tho corresponding month of last yoar, but there was a shrinkage in cheese of about 7,000 cwt. A3 compared, witn May, 1001. A comparison with tho latter month also shows ..bout 13,000 cwt. cheese, nbouc 04,000 carcases mutton, neatly 11,000 legs and pieces mutton, and 3 1,000 carcases of lamb, in favour of May of the pivsent year.
