Rongotea, June 7,
A yory soiious accident occurred hero yesterday, whwi a boy, a year and 10 months old, tho only child of Mr and Mrs Bert Ransom, was kicked by a horse.
Tho grandmothei of tho child (Mrs Freeman), had just returned with him from tho township, nnd was entering tho gate leading to tho houso when the accident happened. She had opened ihe gate, when a horse grazing on the road rushed forward to get into the paddock, and in the attempt to do so jumped over Iho go-cart in which tho child was seated, striking him on tho forehead, and splitting the skull from tho eyebrow to tho top of tho head. Part of tho skull was forced on to the brain, and became fastened underneath tho other portion of the skull. Tho child was picked up by one of Mr Siofert's men, who happoncd to b9 passing, ai:d taken to tho chemist, but tho injury wa-; so serious that nothing could bo dono except stop tho excessive- bleeding, -until the arrival of Doctor Stowv, from Palmorston North, On tho arrival of the doctor tho child was put under chloroform, and iho broken skull forced into its proper position, and considerable forco wns required to accomplish this. Tho casn was so serious that the child was taken to tho Mrs Frneinan's Privnt Hospital at onco.
It will bo at least three days before any definite- opinion can ba givgn us to whether tho child will livo or not.
The report from tho hospital this morning was very favourable, and it is to bo hoped that tho little sufferer will recover.
Some time ago thero was a movement made to appoint a ranger here, but the matter appears to have been allowed to drc:i I think it ia timo something was dune to prevent cattle and horses ronining itliont the street of tho township, as they do at present. Perhaps this accident will wako tho people up to the danger their children run when out and about tho tGwnr-hip.
A meeting is to bo lu-ld on Monday ovening next, in the Temperance Jlalj, of thosa interested iv celebrating the Coronation. Patriots roll up and do your duty!
