The Deighton Murder Case.
(Per Press Association.) t j-i. r, Wellington, May 29. -in the Supreme Court this luornin" the charge preferred against John Deieh" ton of murdering his infant daughter was concluded. The jury, after an absence of an hour, returned a verdict of guilty, but, through the Foreman, said that under the painful circumstances tney wished strongly to recommend the accused to mercy. Deighton, in response to the Registrar as to whether he decided to say anything why sentence oi death should not be passed upon him, made no reply, but stared vacantly round the Court. The Chief Justice then assumed the black cap and pronounced sentence of death, and the prisoner removed apparently unconcerned. His Honour intimated to the jury that then- recommendation would be forwarded to the proper authorities.
