The Borough Estimates.
The estimates for the coming financial year will amount to substantially the same Bum as last year. The proposed rate of four pence and five sixteenths of a penny will produce an inoome slightly under £2000, which will suffice if no new works are carried out, and there appears to be no d: 'ire on the pp»t of the Cornell to do this. The usual sum of £1000 has been set down for Borough maintennnc'j, JBSOQ for street lighting, and another .£BOO for oulverting, and of this * amount it is probable £100 will be, . spent in Hokowhitu with a view of preventing a repetition of flood damage. A further £100 has been allotted to cleaning out the Kawau drain through Jamieson Bros, property, and it is also proposed to expend a sum in the extension of street lighting. The Mayor's favorite scheme of asphalting the drains in the Square has again been erased from the estimates which, as stated, do not contain anything of a sensational nature. It is probable £10 wi" be expended in continuing the footpath along Fitzher-bert-atreet to the Esplanade and the footpaths in streets adjacent to the | Square will also receive much needed attention. We understand on good euthority that there is a desire on the part of several members of the Council to reduce the rate proposed to be struck, but this can only be done by striking off the estimates the work prbposed to be done in the Kawau, the extension of street lighting, and the iSIOO to bo spent on the foothpath to the Esplanade. Whether this will be done remains, of oourse, for the Council to decide. The total income realised by the proposed rate will not exceed the income realised i from last year's rates, I
