Mails for United Kingdom and Continent of Europe per Pal'oha for London direct, will close at the Palmorston North Post Office on Wednesday 14th inst., at 5.45 a.m. Geoboe Inneb, Postmaster. A Record.—No business of any kind was transacted at the Police Court this morning, the only case set down for hearing having been settled out of Court. Inspection. — Colonel Pole-Penton will hold his annual inspection of the Palmerston North Volunteers on Monday the 28th of this month, when it is to be hoped that through a shrinkage in tie finances lie will not be compelled to advise them to disband. \f X Obituary.—We sincerely record the death of Dudley Innes, second son of Mr and Mrs Walter Rntherfurd, which occurred to-day. The little fellow was a fine, bright. Eromisingboy and great sympathy will e felt for the parents in their sad loss. An Unusual Case.—A young man named Robert Needham was charged at the Magistrate's Court yesterday with having made a false declaration with reference to the birth of a child, by stating that the mother was married to him, whereas the child was Illegitimate. The Registrar of Births, Deaths and Mairiages (Mr F. W. Manßfleld) stated that when the accused registered the birth ol the child bet stated in writing that he was married ; to the mother. According to the books no marriage between the parties had taken place. Subsequently accused came to the office and asked to be allowed to alter the registration of the child, as he was not married to the mother. The declaration set forth that the couple were married on July 26th, 1896. Mrs Gillespie, mother of the child, said that for the past 12 months she had been living with Needham, but they were not married. She had been living apart from h? r husband for six yc-.ra. The accused reserved his dolence and wag .jommittea for txial, the Magistrate advising him to plead eni'ty, when brought before tte Suprvme Court, <isk for., the consideration of the C/urt. Bail w°aa allowed in one surety of £10.

Kntivistle was charged vith attempted murder, was committee for trial at Wellington yesterday. .At the present time settlers In thts and the adjoining districts are spending their labour and energy in clearing their land of the last remnants of primeval forest in the shape of stumps.
