Train Delayed.
Last nigbt'i down train from Halcombedid not reach Palmerston until this morning, haying been detained through a boiler tube bursting. An at " tempt waa, made to effect .repair*, but aucb wt« ! found 5 - impracticable, and finally the ballast engine had to bl dtspfctehed; at #\ a.m. to bring Mn the train. The delay would.not ha»e been so great had not the telegraphic communication been cut off, m consequence of the wires having been either torn d»wn, or some of the posts levelled by the ffprto $»£ j»his prerailrf. T>;e r onty'warin*which cotnmunioation coiild be had was, via Foxton, Wellington, Blenheim, Whakapu•ka, and thence across the Straits again to Wanganui. The ballast engine, was m readiness to start by 10 p.ro, but waited official orders to start till 2 a.m. The coincidence was particularly unfortunate *f the engine liaving broken dowu, and tbßiri^e being oselesa at the same time. Beveril intending papsengerj passed the nj^ht ifi waiting rooniy where h good firaW burning, afraid to ? go to the hoteli, m Pfae the train c » ma through unannounced, and left them behind. On the whole they spent a pretty jolly time ofit, m discussing the present aspect of European affa^rs^and^ debatiqg/^aßpne, and Colonial politics. The genial and popular station-master did his best by historical reminiscence ai>d anecdote to beguile tho weary hours for the impatienf travellers.
