# A gold fever is raging m the Argen« tine KopubHc m consequence of the reports of the discovery of the precious metal, m Patagonia. Two hundred petitions for the right to dig for gold m the Rio Gallegos district, where it is said the ore is, have been presented to the Govei'nment, and arranged parties are regularly quitting Buenos Ayresipr the fields. The Buenos Ayres 'Standard states that if these gold mines turn out as rich as expected, . th« Government need Uke no special care about sending colonists and their families to the Rio Gallegos, as 20,000 people will pour into this valley when the fame of the gold spreads tp Europe. Machinery has already been ordered from Europe, and a company has been started to work the mines with better elements than those at present used by the explorers from Punta Arenas, while m former years thr«e gold dollars per day wore the average earnings from gold washing, how the gold washers make twenty gold dollars per day, and one or two parties have made 20,000 gold dollars m tvvomontlis.
