POLITICAL NEWS.
A rumour was prevalent m the lobbies recently that a motion of want of confidence was impending. Oi.o version named Major Atkinson as the mover, another indicated Mr Fulton, the member for Taieri. Tho report further pointed to the retrenchment question as the ground upon which the anticipated motion would be based. It was said that the motion would censure the Government for not proposing considerable reductions m the expenditure, and would call on Ministers to take back their Estimates and reduce them by £100,000 or £150,000. Such were the rumors which were flying about , but no definite information is yet available as to whether the step is really contemplated. At a meeting of members of branches of the Legislature favourable to the use of the Bible m State Schools, it was resolved that Dr Menzios should introduce the question shortly m the L^gis latire Council, and th.it tho question should be kept betore the pub ie as much as possible. Only about a dozen members were present. Mr Bradshaw's Eight Hours Bill provides that after the Ist of January next eight hours shall, " unless where there is a contract m writiug to the contrary," constitute a day's work, and forty-eight hours a week'p work. The Wellington aud Wanganui Education Districts Bill, introduced by Mr J. (x. Wilson, places the County of Horo when 11a m the Wellington Education District, while tho County of Oroua, remains m the Waoganui Diattict. In the Estimates, for a new boiler to the Hinemoa £3500 is set down, and the £2000 for the Stella's boiler again appears. For the San Francisco mail service £23,334 is set down instead of £32,150 :as - last .year, and £292,750' for wducation capitation as against £275,000. : Mr Wilson is going to move that the Special Settlement regulations should be altered so as to provide that a three months' residence during any year from the third to the sixth after occupation, shall be sufficient to comply with them.
