The good people of Wellington were somewhat surprised on Sunday morning, to receive an unannounced visit from a Russian war vessel, the Vestnik, which entered the harbour and anchored- close to the Queen's wharf. She is an old but fast cruiser, able to travel 17 knots, and no tidings had been received of her anticipated arrival. The circumstance which is perhaps the most remarkable of all is the fact that the Vestnik has been able, to come. from IJaunceston to Wei-, lington without^ apparently, being sighted By. any' vessel,, and certainly without information being given. -There were also certain peculiar circumstances m, connection with "her recent visit tp. Australia and Tasmania. The fact of' tier ' being Able J't'6: enter ; Wellington harbour, without having been seen by any of the numerous fleet of steamers now always m these waters, proves how easily a hostile cruiser could pop into Wellington, or other seaport, and take possession of the town. Her unexpected and. mysterious arrival appears, to our inihdv t0 have a peculiar significance, especially at the present juncture.
