A Burglar Abroad.
fWaipawa Mail.]
There is a daring and unscruplou* burglar m the neighborhood of Hastings, and this marauder has made several midnight raids upon the country residents, usually witb considerable success. Two or three householders were robbed, w* understand, last week, but the most daring burglary of all was one which, was perpertrated on Mr Knight's residence near Hastings. The intruder entered the house and ransacked theroom m which the master of the housewas sleeoinp", taking money from hitclothes and valuables from the room.. Quite a number of houses have beem entered, and many attempts, hare, beem made to get into others. For instance* Capt. Birch, discovered the intruder just entering his house on Sunday evening, when it was expected, no doubt, that most of the household would be at church. Another gentleman actually caught the stranger, we are told, but h« wag threatened with his life if be didn't immediately relinquish his hold of him. Being an old gentleman and an invalid as well, he allowed the burglar to escape, rather than run the risk of th« threat being carried out. Quite a reiga of terror has been established m th* country places around Hastings, the police having warned the inmates of houses that a dangerous character is at large.
