With reference to the application of Mr AxitpV for lease of land on the Rnahine ranges, it was dßcided to offer the land under the pastoral clauses of tht Act. Mr R. W. J. Camer applied to lease land at the junction of the Tiraumea andlManawttu lines. Resolved that the Gorartitnent be requested to make the laud a permanent reserve. . Tht Commissioner (Mr Merchant), again brought before the Board the question of purchasing freehold land for vil)age settlements. in accordance with section 168 of the Act. In the. course* of. .a,, discussion which .ensued , on the m«'rtey,'lflfMcCard!e expressed sympathy, with the clauses of tht Act alluded to, and said that m North Wairarapa lie kaewof a number of people who were desirous of purchasing land and settling on it. Eventually it , was resolved that the Commissioner should be asked to tnak« specific .proposals as .to areas and localities; and (on the motion of Mr Reese) that areas be acquired or set apart contiguous to main roads,' for tht accommodation of roadmen.
