Gas Works for Palmerston.
After the meeting of councillors held yesterday, to consider the burgess roll, the mayor asked those councillors pr«. sent to remain and discuss the gas question. Mi- Beston, with whom they had communicated, was m attendance and would give them all information on th« matter. They would discuss the question informally, not as sitting m Council. Th« reason for so doing would be obvious as the meeting had not been called for that purpose, and only some of the councillors* were m attendance. Mr Beston wished to leave Pahnerston on th« following day and they might possibly giva him some idea as to what the Council would be likely to do m the matter. A discussion followed as to the site most desirable for erection of works, and th« matter was left over. The question of a directory was then discussed, Mr Snelson considering that the main portion of which should be m Pahnerston. It was well known that a gas company had never failed or made a composition, and if one were started here it was bound to be a success, of that they need have no fear. Mr Resfcon was here introduced, and informed the Council that he was pre« pared on behalf of his principals to offer the Council terms equal to those on which the Wanganui Company \were working. The company would be composed of mostly Pahnerston residents, if they desired *at least the share-list would be open to them. The majority of the directory would be Palmerston men, and the sittings of the board would be held m Palmerston ; outside directors would have to attend meetings at Palmerston. The qualification required to place a shareholder on the directory would be ag near as he could say; the holding of shares equal to say £100. In reply to Mr McNeil, the deputation stated that he would be willing, if satis* factory progress were not made m "three months' time, that the arrangement plight be considered null and void. Re charge for use of gas, the Corporation would receive 33 J per cent, off thi^ price to be arranged; •'■■'■' : -.% It was decided that re various small matters, such as remittance of rates by Council, railway siding required, site for gas works, etc., that the Council would assist the company m every way m their power, Mr Reston stated that his attorney, Mr Atkinson, would draw up the deeds of concession which would be submitted at the nextjneeting of the Council. Mr Beston having thanked th« meeting for the hearing given him withdrew, and the meeting terminated.
