The Cultivation of Linseed.
The following communication on the subject of linseed growing, by^ Mr McCarty, is made to the. Tapanui Courier :^~ I have got 10 or 12 tons of linseed this year. I'produced that quantity trom very. few acres of land ; and. the same land would mei their grow oats nor wheat. Linseed will grow anywhere m this, district. The land here reminds me ot that •m the north of Ireland, where they grow linseed on a very large scale. The seasons there are, as here, very, late, and cold and wet. Linseed will stand any kind of weather. It is a late crop, to be be" sown m soring, and comes m early for cutting. It can be sown m the latter end of September or the bosrinning, of October, and'is ready for cuti'i j m the middle of February. Linseed is the crop for the farmers to gro"\v. If cut by the reaper, you can grow linseed on the same ground for years m succession. Two years from now we will have the pleasure of ee'eing t lousands of acres of it grown m this district, and we will be able to have plenty of linseed factories instead of dairy factories. I would advise anyone who is sowing linseed to put m fresh seed. The qnantity sown to the acre is 301 b. In cutting it you do not require any men, as from 12 to 16 acres a day can be cut with one of Reid and Gray's reaping machines, and it needs no tying or stooklng. After being being three days cut it is fit for stacking.' One team with two- men will stack 20 acres per day, at the rate of 50 bushels to the acre, and it takes only four men to thresh it with a niiUi- 1 This' will give yon "a &ood idea that' there it-less expense attached to it than any crop grown. The chaff from the mill is w6rth £8 alone for horse- feed. J intend tor^sow 200 acres of it this year. i
