Accident.
• . What might have terminated m a fatal accident happened last evening to a man named Bnrke, one of the workmen engaged on the Manawatu Railway line. A number of men while proceeding up the line with an engine and truck and when near the Longburn junction were suddenly precipitated out of the open conveyance througn. a beast having got m front of the engine, causing a sudden and severe jar to take place. OneoE them, as before stated, was seriously hurt. Burke was found to be quite insensible and Mr Fulton was immediately communicated with by telephone.. That gentleman shortly afteuwarda arrived with Dr Macintire and the man -had then recovered consciousness. The doctor on examination found no bones broken, but conld see the man was suffering most fromJiis head and had him removed to Palmerston. To-day it proved he was suffering from concussion of the brain, but ifc is impossible to say say just yet whether the case Mill, prove a dangerous one. The other men escaped with a few bruisßs of no .consequence. ."We . have since learned that the accident which hapoened yesterday pn the Manawatu Railway line threw the engine off the rails, it being at the time pushing one truck and also drawing another.
