The Canadian Government have informed Sir Alexander Stuart that the Dominion is prepared to grant a subsidy m equal proportion to that given by Australia for the construction and maintenance of a cable to the colonies. The Earl of Granville expresses himself as generally favourable to the scheme. April 22. - The shipment of grapes by the John Elder from Victoria has proved a failure, from the same cause as before, namely — that of packing: m sawdust. The remainder of the fruit by the same vessel is m splendid condition. Twenty thousand .'Greeks are advanc ing to the frontier, where it is reported a skirmish has'alrendy taken place between the Turks and Greeks. The French Chamber of Deputitt have sanctioned the holding of an exhibition m Paris. In connection with the recent Crawford'Dilke divorce case, Sir A. K. Stephenson, Queen's Proctor, has applied for the appearance of Sir Charles Dilke. April 23. The P. and O. steamer Valetta has grounded boavily m the Suez Canal at lumailia, and it has been found necessary to unload her, which is now being done. The Company formed to construct the line of railway from Nelson to Springfield, Canterbury, has been registered with a capital of half a million. Fifteen thousand Abyssinian troops have been massed at Keren, about. 75 miles from Massowah, to resist the occupation of territory m the vicinity of the latter place by Italy. H.M.S. Opal and the gunboat Raven havebeon reeommissioned for service on the Australian Station. H.M.S. Thalia will convey new crews to Außtra- | lia for these vessels.
